Classification and Arrangement of Books
All the books in the Library are Classified and Catalogued according to established International standards followed throughout the world. BPDC Library follows Dewey Decimal Classification scheme for classification. Please read the instructions carefully and follow the steps for locating the books in the Library.
Dewey Decimal System of Classification
The Dewey Decimal System is a method of classifying library materials according to the subject to which they belong. Below are the ten major divisions that represent the universe of knowledge within which all the subjects fall.
The Institute Library has a mission to support the educational, teaching, research and administrative needs of the faculty, students and staff. The collections are also accessible by others who may require permission.
000 - 099 Generalities
100 - 199 Philosophy and Psychology
200 - 299 Religion
300 - 399 Social Science
400 - 499 Language

600 - 699 Technology (Applied Sciences)
700 - 799 Arts

900 - 999 Geography and History
Each of the above has ten divisions which have ten divisions further. These divisions are further divided.
The Number 600-699 is further elaborated below for understanding the divisions.

All the books in the Library are given two set of numbers one is the Call Number and the other is the Accession Number. Users have to look only for the Call Number for locating books in the Library.
Call Number
Every book in the library is given a number to serve as an address for locating the book on the shelf which is called the "Call Number". The Call Number helps in identifying a book based on the subject to which it belongs. There can be two or more books with the same Call Number. For example, if there are two copies of the same book, then both the books will have the same Call Number. This means that they both belong to the same subject and are supposed to be together in the subject rack. The Call Number is composed of two parts –Class Number and the
Book Number.
For Example a book titled “Engineering Mechanics of Solids” by Egor P Popov, and Toader A Balan will have the Call Number "620.105 POP"
Class Number
A Class Number in the Call Number denotes the subject to which the book belongs. A decimal is given after the first three numbers to further identify the area within the subject. (The number 620 in the above example indicates the subject i.e. Mechanical Engineering and the number following the decimal "105" indicates the area "solid mechanics").
Book Number
The book usually consists of the first three letters of the author's last name. In case of more than one author, the first author will be taken for cutter number.
For instance, the author of the book mentioned in the example is “Egor P Popov and Toader A Balan” the authors' names are written in the catalogue as Popov, Egor P and Balan, Toader A. As mentioned earlier the first three characters of the first author alone will be considered for book number i.e "POP".

Accession Number
Accession Number is a unique one given to the books which enables us to know the number of books available in the Library. Unlike Call Numbers, no books will have the same Accession Number.
Library Cataloguing
A Catalogue in the library will give you the complete bibliographic details of a book. Anglo American Cataloguing Rules – II (AACR-II) is followed for preparing the catalogue. BPDC Library is completely computerized using as Library management software called AUTOLIB providing the bibliographic details of the books through Web Online Public Access Catalogue (Web OPAC) via the link (http://webopac.bits-dubai.ac.ae/AutoLib/index.jsp) (User Name: Your Institute ID ; Password: Institute ID). Using Web OPAC and the following the simple steps, one can search the Library books online, verify availability of resources and reserve the same, if needed and access previous year question papers. Users can also check their account such as issued books, returned books and their library charges.
